Our 7 day period research allowed us to notice that a greater amount of waste was being generated on an average weekend day, compared to an average week day. Interviews and observations led us to conclude this is due to the sudden influx of non-residents who come to the Newtown on weekends, be it the ‘party-goers’ at night time or the families who visit Newtown markets. While this extra generation of waste would be primarily due to the extra consumption of food in the area, many residents also noted that these ‘outsiders’ tend to discard their waste in the street, particularly in back laneways.

Research gathered from site visits over a 7 day period combined with information collected from The Watershed Sustainability Centre on King Street, has allowed us to conclude that green waste, primarily food, contributes to the largest portion of waste in Newtown bins. This is a serious issue, as organic matter is the main contributor to methane emissions from landfill.

After researching the amounts of waste generated on the five main streets in Newtown, we were able to narrow this down to a top three. King Street is home to the most restaurants/cafes in Newtown, thus generating large amounts of food waste. Enmore Road comes in second, due also to its many restaurants and numerous pubs. Although Missenden Road is primarily residental, it came in third due to the enormous amount of waste generated by the Royal Prince Alfred hospital.

While all sectors of the community could benefit from use of the ECO ORB, we feel that businesses around Newtown, in particular cafes and restaurants, will see the highest positive result from use of this service. A cafe can use the service as a way to recycle their plastic bottles, dispose of food waste effectively and grow their own herbs - thus creating a sustainable cycle. This would also cause each business to appear (and be) more environmentally friendly. As part of the ECO ORB deal, each business that uses the program will receive a ‘seal of approval’ sticker and poster to place out the front of their shop. This will encourage environmentally-minded citizens to enter.

The City of Sydney Council, serving the area of Newtown together with Marrickville Council, is proactive in encouraging residents to decrease their garbage output. The Council has set a target of 66% resource recovery by 2014, and is currently at 36% recovery

From research conducted over a 7 day period around the main streets of Newtown, we were able to notice an overwhelming trend concerning recycling. While most residents were very proactive when it came to recycling, the large majority of business surveyed had no recycling plan at all. The RPA also proved to manage their waste and recycling very poorly. The ‘Managing Hospital Waste NSW Health Audit (2002-03)’ found that up to 60% of RPA’s waste should have been deemed ‘non-contaminated’ and therefore recycled

The production of the physical ECO ORB would require a cohesive partnership between various teams. The Watershed, a sustainability resource centre in Newtown, would serve as a drop off and collection point, as well as a place of constant contact and support relating to the maintenance and disposal of the ECO ORBS. An external, environmentally-friendly production team would be required to melt the plastic bottles into the physical shape of the orb and construct the worm farm.

statement of intent

Newtown is home to 15,027 people and a great number of diverse businesses, mostly food-related, in an area of 1.9 square kilometres. In this culturally and socially thriving area, the generation of waste per week is a significant issue, particularly for the multitude of businesses that line Newtown’s main streets. Through thorough investigation conducted on location at five of Newtown’s main streets in a seven day period combined with secondary research, we were able to draw various conclusions regarding waste generation in the area. Our intent is to present a ‘waste snapshot’ of the area, presenting the information in an engaging manner, relevant to the aesthetic of Newtown. Newtown is a highly creative, dynamic and forward-thinking area of Sydney, and our alternative method of presenting data in the form of an infographic reflects this. The infographic allows complex information to be displayed clearly and quickly, similar to the fast pace of life in a busy city suburb."

In our research, we surveyed 30 residents of Newtown to determine common views concerning recycling. The majority residents cared about recycling and actively took part in the process. A portion also claimed they did care, but didn’t go out of their way to recycle all the time. A minority also stated they did not
care about recycling and never recycled in their own homes.

At the conclusion of our 7 day investigation period, it was interesting to note that a large portion of waste brought into and generated in Newtown was from visitors to the area. Through interviews and observations, we were able to conclude that Newtown, as a popular shopping destination during the day and party hot-spot during the evening, sees a great portion of its waste generated by people who are not actually residents in the area.
